Losinyi Ostrov National Park

This area lies immediately adjacent to the Moscow satellite towns of Mytishchi and Korolev. Most of the park is covered in coniferous, mixed and deciduous forest, while at its western fringe, closer to the Yaroslavskoe shosse are the Mytishchi quarries and the upper reaches of the Yauza river with their peat lakes, attractive to water birds.

Species
During migration the water meadows along the Yauza river attract such rare raptors as Golden and White-tailed Eagle, Osprey, Merlin and Greater Spotted Eagle. Breeding water birds include Black-headed Gull, Common Tern, Grey Heron, Bittern and Marsh Harrier as well as Great Reed Warbler, an infrequent species in the Moscow region. Occasionally Black Tern and Little Gull may be found. The forested areas are rich in passerines and are home to several species of woodpecker, among them the rare Three-toed Woodpecker. A characteristic winter species at Losinyi Ostrov is the Common Crossbill.

The greatest variety of birds is to be found in spring from April to June.

Access
Public transport — 20 minutes by local train from Yaroslavskyi station to Mytishchi, further on foot or by bus no. 392 as far as the 'Torgovyi Tsentr XL' stop.
